Advance unrelentingly, always with a sense of responsibility, even in the face of errors. The source of creation works to clear the overflowing and generously bestows its bounty upon those who are unassuming.

Summary

Is a reminder to stay humble and not let success go to one's head. The Judgment advises that "modesty creates success", and the image of the Hexagram is that of a mountain beneath the sky, representing the humility and groundedness that should accompany one's accomplishments.

Interpretation

Represents the idea of modesty. The image of a mountain eroding into a plain symbolises a state of becoming and a conscientious attitude towards doing what is right. The Hexagram encourages us to shed ostentatious tendencies, such as indulging in justifications and disregarding the truth, instead focusing on developing our character. Ostentation can manifest in small, careless habits or a lack awareness of opportunities to serve the greater good. Impatience and distrust can also be considered ostentatious, causing us to overlook the small steps that lead to progress. It is essential to follow the truth and the good without ulterior motives and to correct oneself sincerely.

Modesty entails allowing oneself to be guided by a Higher Power without resistance, embracing simplicity and openness, and actively resisting negative habits of mind. It is not about blind faith or disbelief but instead holding an open mind and giving the wisdom of the Sage a chance to prove its worth. Modesty also involves a constant effort to do what is right, a refusal to boast or act arrogantly, and holding onto innocence, sincerity, and openness in all situations.

The Hexagram is a reminder to remain humble and not let success go to one's head. It emphasises the importance of self-reflection, humility, and purpose in achieving success. The concept of modesty and humility was highly valued in ancient China during the Zhou dynasty, where Confucianism was the dominant philosophy, and can also be found in other ancient cultures such as Buddhism and Taoism. These traditions see humility as a path towards spiritual growth and enlightenment.

Only by being modest in one's modesty can one truly achieve great things and cross the "great water." This line also emphasises the value of reticence and using silence and reserve in the pursuit of helping others.
