Hexagram 27 - Providing Nourishment - I

Be mindful of how you nourish yourself with negative thoughts and emotions like worry, doubt, and resentment. These are like a bowl of worms that will only serve to harm and weaken you.


Summary

The Gentle hexagram represents nourishment and fulfilment. It is associated with the mouth and provides physical and emotional sustenance. The hexagram suggests that to achieve contentment and satisfaction; one must be willing to give and receive in equal measure.


Interpretation

Advises us to pay attention to the nourishment we seek for ourselves and what we allow to enter our minds. It reminds us of our dependency on a Higher Power for the necessities of life and urges us to develop a correct attitude to obtain them. We must be careful not to indulge idly in fantasy, as seemingly harmless indulgences shape our fate and determine how we nourish others. The hexagram suggests that the most important means of obtaining nourishment from the Cosmos is through meditation, which cleanses our inner container for nourishment and allows the light force to enter with its therapeutic effect. By cultivating calm and stability in all we say, think, and do, we nourish our superior selves and those around us. The hexagram also emphasises the importance of being flexible and adaptable to sustain oneself and others.


Sage Advice

This means trusting in the natural flow of nourishment in one's life and being persistent in seeking reliable sources of support and sustenance. It is important to prioritise self-care and self-nourishment while also being mindful of the sources of nourishment in one's life and avoiding those that are draining or unreliable. By being selfless and compassionate and putting the needs of others before our own, we can become good leaders and providers. We should identify the needs of others and fulfil them in a timely and effective manner, doing so out of a genuine desire to help rather than out of obligation. Finally, it is essential to be patient and persevere through difficult situations, having faith in the positive outcome of our efforts.


Line 1

Warns us of the consequences of doubting and envying others, which can lead to self-pity and discontent, ultimately resulting in misfortune. It emphasises the importance of maintaining inner independence and self-reliance and not comparing ourselves to others in a negative light. The line also warns against allowing undisciplined inferiors to become annoyed and resist self-development and discipline. Restoring our inner balance through meditation and cultivating equanimity to overcome these negative influences is essential. Sitting in stillness and calmness helps uplift and restore us, allowing us to regain our independence and overcome any challenges we face.


Line 2

Warns against deviating from the correct path in search of nourishment. Such deviation may lead to carelessness and weakness, which could prompt one to go along with someone else's wrongdoing to exert a better influence. However, trusting in the protection of the Sage while not making a genuine effort to correct oneself is unworthy and will bring misfortune. It is important to carefully consider the consequences of one's actions and ensure alignment with what is correct rather than taking the easy way out. It cautions against compromising one's values or aligning with what is incorrect due to weakness or a desire for an easier path. While it may be tempting to go along with something not aligned with our principles or values, it is essential to remember that misfortune may result from such actions. Instead, we should strive to align with what is correct and make a genuine effort to be the best versions of ourselves, even if it requires more effort and diligence.


Line 3

To seek nourishment that does not truly nourish can lead to misfortune and suffering. This line warns us to avoid the pursuit of pleasure and the gratification of the senses as a means of finding happiness. Such pursuits are false paths that may seem promising but ultimately do not fulfil their promises. This line may also indicate seeking recognition or emotional dependency on others as a form of inadequate nourishment. Instead of seeking perfect security and avoiding challenges, we should embrace the moment's challenges with an open mind and detachment, which nourishes us with inexhaustible nourishment.


Line 4

Emphasises the importance of seeking the correct source of nourishment to achieve good fortune. When we nourish ourselves properly by seeking mastery over our weaknesses, we elevate our stature and attract the support of others. This line suggests that when we focus on personal growth and self-improvement, we are more likely to receive the assistance we need to overcome obstacles and achieve unity with others. Ultimately, this leads to good fortune and success.


Line 5

Warns against continuing on the path if an inferior element is present, as it will weaken one's strength and lead to misfortune. Instead, the advice is to seek wise counsel and root out this negative influence before making further progress. This line emphasises the importance of identifying and addressing any weaknesses or negative influences in oneself before attempting to help or nourish others. One can achieve good fortune and positive outcomes by persevering and taking the necessary steps to strengthen oneself.


Line 6

Awareness of danger brings good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water," can be interpreted as a reminder to remain humble and aware of the risk of becoming complacent and forgetting our dependence on higher guidance. The "source of nourishment" is the wisdom and guidance of the Sage, which supports and helps us. However, we must be careful and humble, remembering our responsibility to work on ourselves and help others. Crossing the "great water" signifies the need to displace the influence of our inferior self and discipline our lower impulses to remain in harmony with the cosmos and transmit good nourishment to others. The line suggests that those who stay true to themselves and seek guidance from the Sage with humility and sincerity will gain a position of significant influence and accomplish great things.
