Hexagram 47 - Oppression (Exhaustion) - K’UN

In times of adversity, it is common to feel overwhelmed and doubt our ability to make a positive change. Maintaining quiet strength and faith in ourselves and the universe is essential. It may be tempting to give up or feel that change is impossible, but it is crucial to remain patient and perseverant.

Summary

The hexagram K'un represents the idea of oppression, of being weighed down by a heavy burden, and feeling exhausted. It suggests a lack of support and the need to persevere through difficult times. The key takeaway from the judgment is success through perseverance. The Image indicates that one should be "constant in adversity" to overcome it.

Interpretation

Hexagram 47 reminds us that oppressive and false beliefs can hinder our spiritual growth and lead to exhaustion. These beliefs may include doubts about the Higher Power, the universe's creative power, or others' potential. The I Ching advises us to rid ourselves of these delusions, adopt a neutral and open-minded attitude, and trust in the natural flow of life. It also emphasises the importance of accepting how things are going and not trying to force progress. The hexagram reminds us to remain calm and equanimous in times of adversity, to say little, and to be patient. By doing so, we allow the creative power of the universe to work in its own subtle and zigzagging way and eventually alleviate the oppression. The hexagram encourages us to be grounded and persistent like the earth and to maintain a steady and unwavering attitude like a mountain. We can overcome adversity and achieve success by persevering through difficulties with a constant and resilient spirit.

Sage Advice

"Oppression" is finding balance and fairness in difficult situations and being mindful of the power dynamics in relationships and interactions. It suggests being aware of one's actions and taking responsibility for them, as well as being aware of the needs and perspectives of others. The advice is to be open to compromise and finding common ground rather than asserting oneself at the expense of others. Overall, the message is to maintain balance and fairness in all interactions and approach difficult situations with mindfulness and responsibility.

Line 1

Suggests that the solution to the problem must be found within oneself. The feeling of despair and hopelessness only serve to block one's ability to see the way out. To overcome this, it is essential to cultivate a balanced, cheerful, and accepting attitude and to resist the influence of doubt and hope. Doing so can restore an open mind and allow the solution to reveal itself at the right time. This line emphasises the importance of having a positive and balanced outlook when facing difficulties, as it can help unlock new perspectives and previously unseen solutions.

Line 2

The key to progress is to resist impatience and negative views that block us from unity with the Sage. Sacrificing self-comforting attitudes is essential to free ourselves from oppression. When we feel exhausted, it's usually due to impatience and ambition. We should focus on inner truth, appreciate our blessings, and allow the Higher Power to renew our strength. The second line suggests that we need to cultivate gratitude and patience to overcome obstacles that hinder our progress. By sacrificing negative attitudes and focusing on our blessings, we can tap into the renewing power of the Higher Power and find the strength to persevere.

Line 3

We are reminded that restless effort and repeated attempts to force open a closed door are unwise and can undermine our interests. This can refer to situations where we are pushing too hard for something that is not meant to be or trying to change a person or situation that is not receptive to our efforts. In such cases, it is better to withdraw into stillness and accept the challenges and blessings of the present moment. Instead of fighting against obstacles, we should focus on finding new paths or opportunities that align with our goals and values. We can move forward peacefully and productively by letting go of our attachment to a specific outcome and being open to new possibilities.

Line 4

The Image of being "oppressed in a golden carriage" suggests the danger of becoming trapped in negative, fixed ideas that limit our progress. These ideas can be as attractive and comforting as a luxurious carriage but ultimately lead to oppression and exhaustion. The I Ching advises us to let go of our judgment, both of ourselves and others, and turn to the wisdom of the Sage for help. By remaining open-minded and receptive to new possibilities, we can break free from the limitations of our fixed ideas and move towards a more fulfilling path.

Line 5

In times of oppression, even superior people may face difficulties. The key to overcoming these obstacles is to remain humble and rely on the inner truth. By being modest and acknowledging the limits of our knowledge and abilities, we can open ourselves up to help from the Unknown. It's essential to let go of resistance and self-indulgence and approach the situation calmly and open-mindedly. In doing so, we can overcome the obstructions and emerge stronger on the other side.

Line 6

The metaphor of being oppressed by creeping vines suggests that even the smallest feelings of doubt and negativity can grow and take over our attitude, leading to a collapse of our determination and self-resolve. It is important to remain resolute and not let negative thoughts and doubts take over. This line also suggests that it is vital to recognise when we are being helped and to acknowledge the progress rather than giving in to doubts and negative thoughts that can choke out the truth. Help can only enter our lives when we make room for it by remaining firm against harshness, doubt, and despair.
